Automatic Transfer Switch Testing Requirements

By | July 24, 2025

As part of the Field Quality Control as per specification clauses, testing and commissioning of the ATS Panel will be carried out as per the approved method statement under the direct supervision of factory authorized service representative.

Below are standard ATS testing requirements that shall be considered while doing the electrical testing and commissioning activities.

SYSTEM COMPONENTS

ATS Panel – covered under this method statement

TECHNICAL SPECIFICATION :

TEST EQUIPMENT EMPLOYED :

a) Insulation Megger (With Valid Calibration Certificate)

b) Digital Multimeter (With Valid Calibration Certificate)

c) High Voltage Test Set (With Valid Calibration Certificate)

VISUAL AND MECHANICAL/ELECTRICAL INSPECTION:

Compare equipment nameplate with drawings and specification.

Inspect physical and mechanical conditions.

Confirm components are as per drawings.

Check-up the mechanical on/off operation of all breakers.

Check the spring charging mechanism operations for MCCB.

testing of ATS Switch

Check-up the other additional /parallel operating controls for breakers.

Connect the control supply at the correct terminal and polarity.

Check the on/off operation of MCCB (in ATS circuit) electrically.

Observe external status indication lamp for operation of breakers.

Check the spring charging motor operation MCCB.

Check the manual operation of MCCB through the extended rotary handle or directly at the MCCB.

Check the operation of control circuits as per the drawing.

Check all the interlocks and selections as per schematic.

ATS ELECTRICAL TESTS

Insulation Resistance Test

Before starting the tests, the testing area to be identified by surrounding rope/chain so that except testing personnel, nobody else can have access to the panel till completion of all test.

Using 2Kv megger the insulation resistance between

Phase to Phase
Phase to Neutral } To be tested for Power Circuit
Phase to Ground
Neutral to Ground

The maximum insulation resistance should be 0.2 Mega Ohm.

Using 500V megger the insulation resistance between

Phase to Phase
Phase to Ground } To be tested for Power Circuit
Neutral to Ground

The minimum insulation resistance value should be 0.1 Mega Ohm.

Dielectric  Test

Before starting the test identity, the area for safety purpose as per earliest test.

Disconnect the cables connected to electronic components like U/V relays etc.

Using high voltage test equipment 2.5 Kv -to be applied between:

Phase to Phase
Phase to Neutral } for 1 minute
Phase to Ground
Neutral to Ground

The test withstand capacity to be observed.

MANUFACTURER’S RECOMMENDATIONS:

Manufacturer’s recommendations for testing and commissioning is herewith enclosed.

REPORTS

A written report shall be furnished to certify the works as recorded on the form attached to this document.

SAFETY

Only competent personnel will be carrying out the tests, and only authorized personnel will be present at the testing area.

TRAINING

Will be provided as per training schedule under the contract conditions, before handing over to the owner.

WORK DURATION

The procedure should not require more than 2 hours.
