It is essential to water proof a structure to prevent the seepage or penetration of water for its durability. Water proofing is required for many areas like basements, sunken portions, roofs, terrace gardens and expansion joints etc. Usually extensive waterproofing measures are added to a building at the time of construction, to provide moisture control from the start.
Waterproofing may also be done after a building is built, to address problems as they emerge or as part of a building retrofit. Water proofing is done in various parts of the building which include bathrooms, terrace, roofs, basements, swimming pools, underground ducts, under ground and overhead water tanks.
Water-proofing maintains the appearance of the building and increases the life of the structure. There are several ways of water proofing depending on a structure, site and conditions like:

Method Statement for Bituminous Protective Coating Water Proofing
The aim of this Method Statement is to provide and maintain effective quality control procedures and to execute the work in compliance to standard and good practice at all stages and activities for Water Proofing works of Bituminous Protective Coating. Following equipment’s and tools will be used as required during block work construction.

Steps for Bituminous Protective Coating Water Proofing
Storage and Handling of Materials:
- Materials shall be stored in a cool place and avoid putting in direct sun light.
- Materials shall be placed in a way to avoid the direct contact with ground soil.
- Materials shall not be exposed to the fire or naked flames in any circumstances.
- Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) shall be followed for safety and handling recommendations.
- The materials damaged during transportation, handling or storing shall not be used at site.
Surface Preparation:
- Surface / substrate preparation is the most important for Bituminous Protective coating before application.
- The concrete surface / substrate shall be clean and free from contamination such as dust, oil, grease, organic growth and release agents etc.
- The surface shall be free from standing water.
- All loosely adhering particles such as rust, mortar and cement laitance shall be removed.
- The surface would be cleaned by wire or stiff brushing and finally soft brushing or compressed air.
- Cracks greater than 1.6mm wide shall be rout out.
- The substrate condition shall be approved by the client prior to start application.
Prime Coat:
Prime coat is not normally required (as per manufacturer’s recommendations) however if the substrate is particularly porous or bubble holes are there, then diluted Corroprufe BRE with up to 10% potable water shall be applied with brush or roller in a continuous uniform coating. Allow drying time for minimum 3 hours to proceed for next coat.
Application of Bituminous Protective Coating
- Two coats of Bituminous Protective Coating shall be done under competent personnel’s supervision and as per manufacturer’s recommendations.
- The material will be stirred thoroughly to mix any solid materials that may have settled at the bottom of the packing, until a homogeneous consistency is achieved.
- After thorough mixing, first coat of Corruprufe BRE shall be applied with brushes or rollers in a continuous uniform coating.
- At least 4 hours drying time shall be allowed between the coats.
- Second coat shall be applied in the same manner.
- The theoretical coverage rate is 1.5 to 2 sq-m per liter, to give an approximate dry film thickness of 200 – 300 microns, as per manufacturer’s recommendations
- Adequate ventilation shall be provided (if required)
- Application of water proofing system shall be done by experienced and competent personnel.
- Unauthorized entry shall be restricted to the waterproofing areas.
- Prior to concealing of the waterproofing inspection shall be raised for consultant approval. All subsequent works shall be carried out only after getting written approval.
Curing Of Protective Coating:
At least 24 hours shall be allowed to dry Corroprufe BRE prior to start the next activity (before back-filling or covering) as per manufacturer’s recommendations.
Cleaning:
- Clean all tools and equipment immediately after use with water.
- Empty Corroprufe BRE containers will be disposed off as per local waste management requirements.
